Why the next leap in learning isn’t better answers. Surprise! It’s better memory. (A follow-up to “Beyond ‘Learn to Code’: Rethinking Digital Skills for African Youth.”)
A few days ago, I caught myself about to lose something valuable, and the moment taught me more than the thing I’d just learned.
It happened while deep in an app build session, working through a problem with my AI assistant, and somewhere in the back-and-forth, it clicked. A concept I’d been fuzzy on for weeks suddenly made sense. Real understanding, the kind you feel when it lands. And then the old reflex kicked in: Where is this going to go? I knew that in a few days, when I actually needed it, I’d be scrolling up and down through an endless chat trying to find the one paragraph that mattered. And that, more likely, I’d give up and move on to the next fire of confusion. Again.
Now, why is that small flinch worth sitting with? Well, it points to something too many of us lifelong learners keep getting wrong about AI and learning.
We solved the wrong problem
For almost all of human history, the hard part of learning was getting the answer. You needed a “cheacher” (my grandma’s word for teacher) in the room, a book you could afford, a library you could reach. Access was the bottleneck. So we built our schools, our training programs, and our instincts around delivering answers to people who didn’t have them.
That bottleneck is gone. For a young person with a phone and a question, answers are now infinite, instant, and patient. Ask an AI to explain a “for” loop and it will deliver, cheerfully, at three in the morning, for the hundredth time.
But notice what that does. When answers become free, the scarce thing flips. The hard part of learning is no longer getting the answer. It’s keeping it, being able to find it again, staying with it, connecting it to what you already know, and letting it actually change how you think. Indeed, what you do.
Let me put it plainly. Perhaps even shockingly, an answer you can’t retrieve later might as well never have happened.
Building the lesson into the tool
In my last post, I argued that we should stop pretending that “coding skills” mean memorizing syntax and start teaching young people the things that actually compound. This week, the argument stopped being theoretical and got physical.
I’ve been working on a small tool – the AI Learner’s Journal Kit (AILJK) – that we’re putting in front of young coders in Ghana’s One Million Coders and Nigeria’s 3MTT programs. And I kept slamming into my own complaint. The tool could answer beautifully. It just couldn’t remember with you.
So we (the AI and I) changed two things, and the second one I haven’t been able to stop thinking about.
First, every saved answer became something you can reopen and read in full. It is not a buried line in a long conversation, but an entry you can return to, annotate, and reflect on. Small change. Surprisingly emotional to use.
Second, we taught the Kit to read your own journal before it answers. So instead of explaining “for” loops to you as if you were a stranger every single morning, it can say: “Last week you worked out for loops; here’s how while loops are different.” The embedded AI stops being someone you reintroduce yourself to each day and starts being something that remembers your road.
That second feature is, technically, not very impressive. Philosophically, it changed how I thought about the whole project.
Memory is an equity issue
This matters everywhere, but it matters more for the young African learners we, as elders, must care about.
A young person in Tegbi, Gwagwalada, or Sokoto, learning over a patchy connection while juggling other responsibilities, cannot always return to the same teacher tomorrow. They can’t assume the workshop facilitator remembers where they got stuck. The continuity that a well-resourced student takes for granted (such as a tutor who knows your history and a cohort that tracks your progress) is exactly what’s missing.
A tool that remembers fills that gap. The journal becomes the teacher that persists when the connection drops and the cohort moves on. Forgetting is not a neutral inconvenience; for learners with the least slack in their lives, it is one of the quiet reasons good intentions don’t turn into skills. No young person should have to wrestle their future out of the jaws of poverty alone. Memory, it turns out, is an equity issue.
A vending machine, or a mentor?
There’s a deeper reason this is the right thing to build. Reflection is where learning consolidates. We don’t actually learn from experience; we learn from reflecting on experience. The answer is the raw material; the understanding is what happens when you return to it and fit it into the rest of your mind.
An AI that only answers is a vending machine: useful, fast, forgettable. A tool that helps you remember, revisit, and reflect is closer to a patient mentor. The difference isn’t intelligence. It’s continuity.
What this means for how we build and teach
If you’re a learner, keep a journal; a real one you can search and return to. The act of writing down what you understood, and being able to find it next month, is the skill. It outlasts any single answer.
If you’re building learning tools, stop optimizing only for the perfect response. Optimize for what happens after the response: retrieval, reflection, continuity. The smartest answer in the world is wasted if it evaporates.
If you’re running a program, such as the One Million Coders, 3MTT, or any of the bold efforts trying to bring millions of young Africans into this emerging technology, environment, and society, measure whether learners can return to and build on what they learned, not only whether they got an answer today. Focus on retention of understanding, not just delivery of content.
The quieter race
There’s a loud race happening in AI right now, and it’s for better answers. The biggest actors are gunning for bigger models, sharper responses. Fine. Let them run.
But there’s a quieter race, and for the generation of young Africans coming online into all of this, it’s the one that actually decides who thrives: the race for better memory. The tools, habits, and programs that help a hard-won insight survive past the moment it arrived.
Because the answer you can’t find again never happened. And a generation’s worth of understanding is far too valuable to let evaporate.
